It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the new year, and now it's already June. Lately, I've been acutely aware of how quickly time is passing. As time speeds by, we often find ourselves experiencing fear and anxiety due to the uncertainties of the future. We don't know if the efforts we're currently pouring into will bear fruit, or what kind of response our writing will receive.
While sometimes it's wise to simply go with the flow, other times taking control of the current can be a better approach to life. If you find yourself overwhelmed by vague fears and anxieties amidst the rapidly passing time, it can be helpful to imagine what you'd like to be doing on December 31st, who you want to be with, and what feelings and achievements you'd like to have realized.
Reverie, The Letter (1870s)_Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (Spanish, 1841 - 1920)
This kind of visualization provides us with a positive future vision and gradually helps alleviate our current fears and anxieties. To overcome our fear of the future, we need to take the time to reflect on what we truly desire and what we can do right now to achieve it.
On December 31st, what kind of person do I want to be? What kind of feelings do I want to experience that day?
As we take steps towards our goals, we gradually reduce our fear and anxiety about the future and begin to live the life we desire.
▶ When setting goals, it's not just about persistently trying to perform certain actions, but rather taking the time to consider how we can enjoy doing the things we need to do. The answer to this contemplation becomes the motivation that naturally leads to action.
▶ If there are ninety-nine things we dislike doing for every one thing we want to do, why not try attaching a tiny bit of affection for our favorite thing to those ninety-nine tasks? As someone who enjoys writing in a diary, when I find myself struggling to focus on work, I take a moment to open my diary and organize my thoughts.
